The Lampasas VFW Post No. 8539 will be the proud host of the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) as they unveil their new artillery piece, aptly named “The Judge.” Saltworks Camp No. 2353 is scheduled to convene at the Lampasas Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday, July 22, at 3:00 p.m. for a brief business meeting followed by a program presented by James Bozeman, Texas Division Chaplain.
Following the meeting, members will proceed to the VFW post, where a specialized class on the use and care of the cannon will be conducted by D. W. Davis of Comanche, the 7th Texas Brigade Commander and a member of SCV Camp No. 1982 of Hico. “The Judge” will be on display at the post from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., with the public warmly invited to attend and learn more about this remarkable piece of War Between The States history.
'The Judge,' a six-pound, 3-inch smoothbore cannon, is a full-scale reproduction crafted by Paulson Brothers Ordnance Corp. of Clear Lake, Wisconsin. Believed to have been built in the mid-1990s, this meticulously designed piece, complete with caisson and limber, has primarily been featured in living history events at historic Fort Stockton. The fully equipped six-pounder includes all necessary accoutrements, embodying the era’s artillery craftsmanship.
The SCV was established in 1896, and is charged with preserving the history and legacy of the Confederate veteran. The organization is the direct heir of the United Confederate Veterans, and the oldest hereditary organization for male descendants of Confederate soldiers. Today, the SCV continues to serve as a historical, patriotic, and non-political organization dedicated to ensuring that a true history of the 1861-1865 period is preserved.
