100 Years Ago July 1, 1915
The shrill and nerve-racking notes of the fire alarm whistle were sounded between 12 and 1 o’clock. The fire proved to be the weeds and grass in the Catholic church lot. There was no damage to the church property.
Dr. E. W. Vaughan of Lampasas, a specialist, will be here July 3 and those wishing to consult him will find him at Simmons’ Drug Store. Dr. Vaughan intends to make regular visits to our town in the future.
Will Hart had the misfortune to lose his oat crop by fire a few days ago. He had set an old straw stack on fire and the flame in some manner reached his stack of oats and it was entirely consumed.
C. W. Garrison left this week for Menard, Sonora and Rock Springs in the interest of the J. D. Kelly Co. He will take orders for the famous boots they manufacture.
G. M. Smith Jr., returned from Kansas City this week. He was accompanied back by his brother J. Neil Smith, who will spend some time in this section.
City Marshal Chadwick informs the Star that if our citizens will pile up in a convenient place the tin cans and rubbish around the place it will be hauled away by the garbage wagon free of charge. This is a good chance to clean up and it is to be hoped all will take advantage of the opportunity. A clean town now only looks good to a stranger but it is healthier for the inhabitants.
50 Years Ago July 3, 1975
Mrs. John Shewmake and daughter, Mrs. Richard Lane and Ricky of Dallas visited with Mrs. Shewmake’s sister and family, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Little and Chuck, and her brothers, Bill Hinyard and Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Hinyard. Mr. and Mrs. Mike Hinyard and son, Dustin, joined the group for a steak supper at the Little home.
Mr. and Mrs. Nickie D. Wright are parents of Mandy Michelle, five pounds, 13 ounces, born June 26.
Mrs. Kittie L. Williams, Keith and Keisha, Mrs. Lydia Goodwyn, Tena and Shelia, Miss Patricia Brown and J. D. Washington of Los Angeles, Calif. and Thedore R. Galloway of Cleveland, Ohio are here visiting the Galloway family.
The San Saba High School Cheerleaders are preparing for the coming school sports season. The group won three superior (blue ribbon) and one Excellent (red ribbon) ratings at Tarleton State University where the National Cheerleader Association Clinic was held. The cheer group consists of Carol Whitley, Barbara Bailey, Melinda Miles, Jayne Lindsey and Annie Hamrick. Betty Loudermilk is the sponsor for the Cheerleaders.
