On Wednesday, May 14, City employees from two departments took time out of their busy schedules to host the 3rd grade students.
During the students’ visit to the wastewater ponds, they were given an opportunity to learn how dirty water goes through a process to become reclaimed water/repurposed water. The children were fascinated to see what lives in that water, some items found in the dirty water, and the system through which the water travels throughout the process. The children enjoyed a demonstration of the Vector truck which is used to unclog pipes and the water drainage system. The children were given an opportunity to ask questions and learn more about how dirty water gradually becomes reuseable water again. The children gratefully thanked their presenters, Jesse and Robbie.
The students also visited the recycling center. Welcomed by Juan, Alonzo, Robert, John, Rick, Jose and others, the students were taken to see the huge scales used to determine the weight of the trash. Each employee demonstrated a portion of the sanitation and recycling process. One helper assisted in the demonstration of residential truck trash pickup. The group was “wowed” when the full trash truck dumped its contents into the semi, ready for transport and seeing the “tractor” work it nicely into the semi. They assisted in sorting and filling the recycling packers with either cardboard and/or plastic. Then stood back and watched the packs bundled and forklifted out, awaiting transport to the processing recycling destination. The students appreciated the opportunity of learning what had happened to the many bottles they collected in March during the plastic bottle recycling challenge.
