Countdown to the last day of school is on everyone’s mind. Shortly after school is out, I will head to San Antonio and board a plane with my family. Next week, I will check in for my cruise to Greece. I’m finally feeling a little urgent. I need to check with family and friends to see if someone has a medium-sized suitcase with wheels. I feel sure that my son Shane has one I can use. You wouldn’t think packing for a cruise would be so difficult, but suitcase surcharges are expensive. So, I need two weeks of two outfits a day. I’ve done a fair amount of travelling, so I am reasonably good at keeping it small. I’m afraid my garden will suffer while I am gone. If I need something, I may pop over to RS BoHo and see what they have that will fit my budget.
Mother’s Day passed very pleasantly. My son Scott and his wife Heather took us to Friedhelm’s in Fredericksburg for lunch. Shane and his wife Earnie bought me a beautiful pair of blue earrings for the cruise. Chrissy made me a beautiful sunflower wreath for the sunroom, and Tracy and Mark gave me cheesecake. Plus, Scott and Heather bought me flowers and chocolate-covered strawberries. That covers all the bases. Sunday church was a gift as well. Every lady was given a beautiful rose, a honey bear and scripture spoons should arrive this week.
The seniors had their senior luncheon last Tuesday. As usual, Mike Phelan cooked the most delicious steak. The ladies provided the rest of the goodies. This week, the graduating eighth graders will be treated to a lasagna dinner by the members of the First Baptist Church.
The Alumni Banquet took place Saturday evening. The Bailey family provided the meal. Community members donated desserts. There were between 75-80 guests present as well as the senior class.
Kristy Perry and sister Laura, lead God Bless America and the school song. Barry Fikes was our emcee for the evening. Mrs. Wilson, our new principal, gave a state of the school address. She is a tremendous asset to our school. The National Honor Society under the leadership of Mrs. Locker managed the gym set up, dessert tables and will restore the gym to its usual pristine condition. Thank you once again to the banquet committee who does a wonderful job every year.
The GT class left for Matagorda on Friday and returned on Tuesday. Monday was a severe weather make-up day. The Men’s Prayer Breakfast was well attended last Saturday. If you haven’t attended yet, please give yourself a treat and come next month.
Next Saturday is the Senior Roping event. Sunday will be the Community luncheon hosted by the Richland Springs Preservation Society. I’m continually amazed at the generosity and sense of community shown by the people in Richland Springs. The Baccalaureate Service at the Christian Church will be Sunday at 6:00 p.m.
By now, everyone has read the news that the roof has been replaced on the bank building. That was an important first step to restoring the building. Renovations will begin on the interior in June. Next week will be closing awards ceremonies at school.
I want to give a shout out to Nedrah Mangan. Nedrah sent me a lovely letter from Burnet, Texas. It was a walk down memory lane. Her were parents, E.M. and Lela Stringfellow. Apparently, they lived near the Munsell family and knew about my “old house.” Nedrah’s letter shows me that at 97 she is doing very well. She would love to have more news about births and deaths, but that is difficult for me. Should you wish to write to her, I can give you, her address.
Prayers are needed for Troy Soto, Johnny Reeves, and several other people who are battling cancer. Our country needs rain; prayer for our government and the world turmoil are needed as well. Wherever we have heroes risking their lives for ours, we need prayers. Most of all, Lord, protect our precious troops and their families.
