San Saba ISD election last week had items of great interest for many. There were two spots open on the school board and a bond election with two propositions.
The San Saba ISD website posted Preliminary / Non-Canvassed Election Results which showed:
School Board Trustee
Jake Lackey - 417
Michael Brand - 292
Rusty Glover - 410
Besides the open spots on the school board, there was also the issue of the bond election propositions that held quite a bit of interest in the hearts of many in San Saba.
San Saba ISD ran long legal notices in our April 10th edition which spanned three entire pages. They also submitted small articles each week explaining different benefits for the school should the bond election come out in the affirmative for the school.
School personnel also seemed to be in favor of what the extra funds would bring to their programs at the schools as well as the benefits students would see.
You also had many who opposed the extra funds for schools. Many saying that the very idea of ... property taxes are unconstitutional in the first place...and they want to raise the property taxes?
Some of those in opposition posted lengthy posts on Facebook. Others simply talked about their feelings of opposition everywhere they went to anyone who would listen.
Some citizens were willing to purchase quite a bit of ad space to make their opinions known in the San Saba News & Star.
Emotions ran high on both sides. Everyone seemed to have... not just an opinion - but a very strong opinion.
Here are the two propositions that were on last Saturday's ballot as well as the outcomes according to the San Saba ISD website:
Proposition A
'The issuance of $14,700,000 for the construction renovation, improvement, acquisition, expansion, and equipment of school buildings in the district, including security systems, career and technical education facility, 3rd and 4th grade building renovations, a new band hall, elementary school fencing and playground and necessary sites, and imposition of the taxes sufficient to pay the principal and interest on the bonds; this is a property tax increase.'
For - 353 Against - 408 Proposition B
'The issuance of $14,340,000 for the construction renovation, improvement, acquisition, expansion, and equipment of school buildings in the district, including necessary sites, such as a new performing arts center and a weight room and levying the imposition of taxes sufficient to pay the principal and interest on the bonds; this is a property tax increase.'
