On March 4, the San Saba Garden Club (SSGC) hosted its monthly meeting at the Mill Pond Clubhouse with 16 members attending.
Hostesses Cindy Sloan, Sherie Clarkson, and Tina Gunter provided delicious refreshments, including charcuterie cups, homemade focaccia bread, a cheese tray, and a choice of punch or fruited water.
A highlight of the gathering was guest speaker Jimma Byrd, a former SSGC member and Master Gardener, who gave an informative presentation on using drought-tolerant plants and wildflowers to attract butterflies and birds. According to Byrd, hardy perennials and native blooms not only beautify yards but also encourage pollinators to flourish in the community.
Club members are now gearing up for their biannual Garage Sale, to be held at the San Saba Civic Center on April 25 and 26. As announced by Dianna Furlan, chair of the Ways and Means Committee, funds raised will help support SSGC’s community projects and club activities.
In addition to the exceptional finds and prices at the SSGC Spring Garage, there will also be the exclusive chance to win a beautiful quilt named “Lady Amelia,” handmade by artist Donna McKinney, a quilter for eight years and member of SSGC for three.
The machine-pieced and hand-quilted 90” x 90” Lady Amelia will fit San a queen size bed. There are 24 assembled blocks of floral calico fabrics with blue polka dot sashing surrounded by a forest green border and finished with 6” calico piano key border. The backing is muslin with lightweight batting.
Tickets for the quilt are one for $5 or three for $10 and can be purchased from any of the SSGC Ways & Means committee member (Janice Bates, Jan Beaver, Janis Murray, Sarah Lott, Monda McMahan, Donna McKinney, Cindy Sloan, or Dianna Furlan. The drawing will be held on Saturday, April 26 at 1:00 p.m.
Looking ahead, the group’s April meeting will be a field trip to Jan Jan’s Nursery in Rising Star, offering members the chance to explore new plant varieties and gardening techniques firsthand.
Anyone interested in cultivating friendships, developing gardening skills, and contributing meaningfully to the San Saba community is encouraged to contact a club member or attend any of the regular meetings, generally held at 2 p.m. on the first Tuesday of the month at the clubhouse in Mill Pond Park.
