The Richland Springs Report

Our crazy spring weather continues to teeter back and forth with winter. It’s one of those strange and special things about this area. You need to walk outside before you decide what to wear for the day. It’s part of the spring pattern of colds, allergies, and sniffles. Weather in Texas is an exciting daily event.

We are about a month away from STAAR testing, and I suspect that teachers and administrators across the state are worrying about the status of their students. Although it’s a case of shutting the barn door after the horses have left, schools should never have been shut down for so long. Our kids have suffered and will continue to do so for some time. An enormous amount of time and effort is being put into getting all our students on grade level, and hopefully it will result in meeting our educational goals.

Spring sports are in full swing. Golf, tennis, softball and track have all had their first competitions. We have a brief respite with our spring break, but this next month is going to be crazy.

The Men’s Breakfast continues to be a success with the men and sons who come the second Saturday of the month. Thirtyone participants came to enjoy the message, fellowship, and great food this past Saturday.

Please remember that the food pantry at the First Baptists Church is open from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. every first and third Monday of the month. If you have a food emergency, please contact the church or Franky Soto, and a food box will be prepared for you.

The Ladies Bible Study and quilting has adjourned for the summer. They will have a monthly sew day or sewing excursions during the scorching summer months. They are also preparing the little quilt shop downtown for residents to come and shop or get some free quilting help.

I can’t seem to keep my birdfeeders full. My new windows give me a perfect view of all the little critters coming to eat. Unfortunately, there is also a little side effect that is happening. They leave the feeder and fly right into my windows. I’m becoming used to hearing a thump every now and then. I check to make sure they get up and move on.

Our school is going through a transition period. Mrs. Wyatt is retiring and going to assist her daughter in her business.

I’ve worked with Mrs. Wyatt as a fellow teacher and then as a principal. She has an immense love for her students and fellow teachers. She will be missed, and we wish her all the best in her new endeavor. Our new principal is Mrs. Amy Wilson. She is fitting in very well and making her mark upon our student body. I’ll write more about her next week.

Please pray for rain; it’s getting dangerous with last season’s leaves thick on the ground. Fire danger is on everyone’s mind. Please pray for peace in the Middle East and Europe. Our government needs our prayers, and hopefully we can learn to collaborate with one another in harmony instead of acrimony. Please find the time to see to your elderly friends and relatives and have a great spring break.
