70 Years Ago March 10, 1955

Miss Shirley Rae Spears, accompanied by Miss Peggy Mitchell and Jimmy Millican, spent the weekend with her parents, Mr. and Mrs.Aubrey Spears. The young ladies attend TSCW, while Millican attends North Texas State Teachers College.

Repair work is underway this week around the San Saba courthouse, raising the sidewalks about six inches to the level of the street curbing and making the walks 18 inches wider.

Daryl G. Daniel, seaman, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Daniel attack aircraft carrier USS Yorktown. The Yorktown operated with the U. S. 7th Fleet, providing air coverage and support for the amphibious craft taking part in the Tachen Islands evacuation.

Regardless of one’s person view about the use of alcohol as a beverage, it is plainly evident that if he drinks, aids or supports the liquor business in any way he is adding his part to a business that is fast destroying the homes and character of our people.––H. Three babies were born during the week of March 1-8 in San Saba County Memorial Hospital: a daughter, Susanna Gabrielle, weighing six pounds, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Murray Friedlander on March 2; On March 4, a son, Hugo Wayne, weighing seven pounds and twelve ounces, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Travis Preece of Lometa; and a son, Billy Jack, weighing six pounds, was born to Mr. and Mrs. James A. Faught on March 5.

10 Years Ago March 13, 1975

Julie Sloan, San Saba High School girls basketball coach has announced that two San Saba girls were named to the District 24-AA “Honorable Mention” team. Barbara Bailey, a junior and scoring leader for San Saba was named to the offensive team and Donna Eden was named to the defensive unit -- the only freshman so honored.

Mr. and Mrs. David Rainbolt are the parents of a baby daughter, Candy, born at Lampasas Hospital. The mother is the former Desta Lemons.

A special meeting with the San Saba Industrial Board failed to materialize as Foy Crockett, who proposed the idea of bringing a railroad car repair industry to San Saba advised Jesse Miles, Industrial Board Chairman, that he had decided on constructing the plant in Hugo, Oklahoma. Crockett indicated that he had received a better offer in Oklahoma.

The San Saba Lions Club has donated a large number of magazines, mostly National Geographic collected by the late Alma Ward Hamrick, author of The Call of The San Saba, and contributed to the Cherokee Home. Making a receiving the contribution were Frank Churchill, Paul Ramirez, Pedro Maldonado, Dennis Cantu, Castulo San Miguel and Bob Lane. Efforts are being made to form a Lions Club in Cherokee.

Now that basketball season is over, the old San Saba High School gym is being completely redone. Much of the wood that has been ripped out will be salvaged to make a new floor. It is part of an extensive repair and remodeling program for San Saba ISD with money from a recent bond issue.
