Journalism scholarships available for seniors, college students

The South Texas Press Association is accepting applications for its two scholarships for the calendar school year 2025-2026.

The two $1,500 scholarships, for a high school a senior and an upper level junior/senior, require an application, essay, three journalism samples and two letters of recommendation.

Applications can be found online at southtexaspress.com/ scholarships and must submitted by 5 p.m., Tuesday, April 4, 2025. They can be submitted electronically or mailed to: STPA Scholarship c/o Christine Granados, 712 West Main St., Fredericksburg, Texas 78625.

Applications received after 5 p.m., April 4, 2025, will be disqualified.

The STPAHigh School Scholarship requires a graduating high school senior who is pursuing a career in newspaper journalism to have minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.

The applicant must be enrolled as a full-time student (12 or more semester hours) at an accredited college/university.

The applicant must submit: a one-page essay about why journalism is needed in a democracy, and what you hope to achieve through journalism; three writing samples and two letters of recommendation.

The STPA College Scholarship requires an upper-level college student, who is pursuing a career in newspaper journalism, to be enrolled as a full-time student (12 or more semester hours) at an accredited college/ university.

The applicant must submit: a one-page essay about why you have chosen a career in newspaper journalism, and what you hope to achieve in your career; three journalism writing samples (two must be published bylined) and two letters of recommendation.
