Welcome to the year 2025. Today is the day thousands of people will pledge to exercise more, eat less, eat better, attend classes, get out more and spend less. The list is endless but not the results. Experts claim that most resolutions will be broken in the second week of the new year. That seems a little negative even if they claim to be experts. I think most of us try for three to four weeks before “life” gets in the way. My goal is to lose another 10 pounds by June. That seems reasonable, but I know better. It will be almost impossible unless I make major changes to my diet and life.
Still, I’m going to give myself a shot at meeting that goal. If you are out there thinking like me, slap yourself and tell yourself, it can be done. Don’t let the negatives around you stop your forward progress. If you slip, get back up and try again. Look how long it took to make a working light bulb.
The First Baptist Food Pantry had a wonderful surprise just before the holiday break. Miss Kuder has been encouraging kids to bring canned goods for the pantry, and they did so with whole hearts. They want to make sure the kids know how magnificent a gift it was. Thank you to everyone who participated.
The school had a trial evacuation drill before the break as well. In case of an emergency, such as fire, the students will be bussed to the First Baptist Church. This will allow students to be picked up by parents and not be in the way of emergency vehicles. Thank you to First Baptist’s Galen Guillory for opening the church for the drill.
Russ and I are going to Fredericksburg to meet with my eldest son, Scott, and his family on Saturday. We were one among many who spent Christmas alone. It was rather nice to sit and be quiet. The Christmas rush tends to leave people cross and worn out. A day of peace and reflection is the perfect cure. We usually eat at either The Old German Bakery or Friedhelm’s Bavarian Restaurant. I prefer Friedhelm’s because it is quieter, and you can sit and talk.
Christmas Eve service at the Baptist Church was conducted by four of the six Elkin kids. Clara was on banjo, Cody on guitar, and Caden and Chloe were singing. The service went well, and it was followed by some delicious food. Miss Bea’s homemade tamales were the hit of the evening.
We have celebrated the Advent of our Savior into the world. A tiny babe that changed the course of history and impacted the world. We will now prepare for the event that changed the future for millions of people. The sacrifice of the life of Jesus for the sake of offering sinners a new life. How great is that!
The prayer list is heavier by several people. A young father killed, a friend with cancer, another with severe heart problems. We need prayers for the family that lost all their possessions in a fire in San Saba. Driving back from Llano I could see a major accident had occurred based on the large amount of damage to both sides of the road. Please pray for your community, our country, the turmoil in the world, and our incoming new Congress. Thank you, God, for this unique country we live in, and help us to make it an even better place. Most of all, please protect our precious troops and their families. Happy New Year.
