T. J. Stewart, highway department employee for about 20 years, succeeded Henry Trotter as senior maintenance foreman in San Saba county for the State Highway Department.
C. E. Yoakam of San Saba and two other representatieves of the San Antonio Livestock Expostion left for a 17-day, 5,000 mile air tour of Mexico, Guatemala, Panama, Venezuela and Cuba. Yoakum and other stockmen want to invite Latin American breeders to the San Antonio Livestock Show.
Cpl. and Mrs. William Coe Graves of Ft. Knox, Ky., announce the birth of their first child, a girl, Betha Coleen, born Jan. 2. She weighed six pounds.
Mack Johnson, seaman, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Penny Johnson, is spending the holidays at home. Johnson, who is serving aboard the Carrier USS Boxer, has traveled 60,000 miles during 1954 on his cruise while in the far east.
Mr. and Mrs. Lon K. Strickland spent the Christmas holidays visiting with relatives at the Mound near Gatesville.
40 Years Ago January 3, 1985
A giant Purple Top Turnip was grown by Mable Edmondson of San Saba. The giant turnip weighed in at 7 pounds. Other turnips grown in the Edmondson garden weighed as much as 5 pounds.
San Saba County Sheriff Brantley Barker, reports that a suspect in the armed robbery of Pronto Liquor Store in San Saba is being held in the County Jail. Formal charges were expected to be filed against the suspect soon.
For last weeks news, Mrs. Arthur Otte called and said their 49th wedding anniversary was the next day. They were married at Bowser Dec. 22, 1935, by the Rev. Henry Cleghorn. Mrs. Otte is the daughter of the Ed Cowarts.
Members of the San Saba Lions Club prepared food baskets and toys to be delivered to needy families for Christmas. The group who were gathered at Ray Harvell’s Garage delivered 20 baskets of food which included baked hams, chickens, and canned goods. Toys were delivered to families with children. The toys were made available by the San Saba Volunteer Fire Department, San Saba High School, National Honor Society, and the lions Club. The food was made available by the Lions Club.
Elizabeth Taylor was the winner of the drawing held at Vaughn’s Photo Shop and Fast film Processing. The prize was a Vivitar 35 mm camera, case, film, and accessories. The drawing was sponsored by Vaughn’s Photo Shop and Cherry Hunt manager of Keaton Kolor Film Processing, Inc.
