When the 911 call went out Saturday night, San Saba VFD initially responded with both pumper trucks and one brush truck to a structure fire in the 600 block of West Pecan in San Saba.
A San Saba VFD representative was not sure if anyone was in the house when the fire started, but no one was in the house when they arrived.
When San Saba VFD arrived, the house was fully engulfed. Because flames and embers were flying and houses were close together in that area, Richland Springs and Cherokee VFD were dispatched at 10:30 p.m. to assist as a second structure was now at risk.
The VFD's were able to save the second house with only minimal damage, but the first house was a total loss. Two vehicles that were in the carport of the first house were completely destroyed, and another car on the street also had some minimal damage.
San Saba Police Department and Sheriff’s Department also responded and cordoned off the area which was a great help as many folks were out trying to get a glimpse of what was happening.
EMS was standing by on scene in case of injuries.
A reminder: When you see an emergency like this, it is best to stay back and let the First Responders do their jobs.
No firefighters were injured during the event, and a San Saba VFD representative did not know of any injuries at time of this printing.
The San Saba VFD volunteer said the teams came together and worked well for a good response. The house went up in flames extremely fast, and there was nothing that could have been done.
The San Saba VFD left at 3 a.m. and returned at 6 a.m. and then again at noon to put out hot spots. Cherokee VFD stated their units were released and returned to their station about 1:30 a.m.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
