Simple Truths

Matthew 9:27-30 “And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, Thou Son of David, have mercy on us. 28. And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus said unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord. 29 Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you. 30 And their eyes were opened.”

Faith is a very important necessity in a person’s life. I believe that all men are given a measure of faith to believe what God wants them to believe, but many never exercise it properly, and finally become hardened, and can never believe anything without first seeing it. But there are some things that can only be seen, or received through faith. The scriptures tell us in Hebrews 11:6 “For without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” So, we see that God is only pleased by the faith that we have in him as to his person, and abilities. “and that he is a rewarder.” Do you trust that he can and that he will?

Briefly, I want to look at some things that we can receive by faith.

We see in our text in verse 30 of Matthew 9 that “Faith brings sight” – “And their eyes were opened.” In this story, these men received physical sight because of their faith, but also, according to the will of God. Not only can we receive physical sight, but more importantly, spiritual sight to recognize the Lord as he is speaking and dealing in our lives. An example is found in Luke 24:31. Two of Christ’s disciples are walking down the road to Emmaus when Jesus steps out and begins to talk to them (now this is after he has been crucified, buried and raised again) concerning his death and resurrection. They are sad about what has happened and confused about what they have heard, and Jesus in verse 25 confronts them sharply for their lack of faith. V 25 “Then said he unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken,” And then verse 27 “And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.”

What a message that must have been; Jesus preaching Jesus!!! When they reached their destination, they asked Jesus to eat with them and verses 30, 31 speaks of their spiritual eyes being opened that they could recognize him, “And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them. 32 And their eyes were opened, and they knew him.”
