Down Memory Lane

100 Years Ago November 9, 1924

Judge G. A. Walters will observe his 80th birthday on Nov. 23 and he comes down to his office daily as he has been accustomed to for the past 57 years since he began his law practice in San Saba in 1887.

A deal has been closed here during the past few days whereby R. B. Bagley, well-known pecan and warehouse man, became owner of the 116-acre pecan farm long known as the W. R. Baxter farm, near Harkeyville, and which was sold by Mr. and Mrs. Bob Murphy, who purchased it a couple of years ago.

First Lt. Lester L. Lord, son of Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Lord of O’Donnell, Texas, formerly of San Saba County, was married to WAC Sgt. Janie Bock at the AAF Overseas Replacement Depot. Sgt. Janie Bock, who is from Tacoma, Wash., is stationed in nearby Salt Lake City where she is on duty recruiting other WACS.

Shortage of harvest hands in this vicinity is causing cotton and pecans to come in rather slowly here, it was noted on the past weekend when several families came in for shopping from the rural sections and returned early afternoon to continue the harvesting while good weather predominates.

60 Years Ago November 5, 1964

Mr. and Mrs. Emit Peavy and daughters, Lisa, Jan and Jill, of Conroe were weekend visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Emit Peavy, Mr. and Mrs. Milton Harris and Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Thornton.

Mr. and Mrs. August Kowierschke, Anson Garrett, Layton Garrett and Mr. and Mrs. J. C. McGregor of Richland Springs were in Hamilton to attend a singing. While there the Garrett brothers visited their nephew and family, Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Garrett.––Mrs. Layton Garrett.

The Indians of Cherokee elected Martha Lock, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Lock, as their football “Sweetheart” and the Pep Squad named Lames Low, son of Mrs. Avery Low, as their Beau in halftime ceremonies at the Cherokee-Mullin game. Low was presented a hand-tooled leather billfold embossed with “Pep Squad Beau” and his name. Miss Lock was presented a large bouquet of white mums by Low and she was escorted by him to the platform backed by a huge blue and white heart with CHS Football Sweetheart in glitter. Here she was presented a charm bracelet with a heart charm engraved, “1964 CHS.”

Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Maultsby are the parents of Harold Kenneth II, six pounds, born Oct. 30.

Mr. and Mrs. Apolonia Coronado are the parents of Diana, five pounds, six ounces, born Nov. 1.

San Saba nimrods go to Colorado to kill a deer and Colorado hunters come to Texas. The past month men here hoisted their rifles and “got away from it all,” for a few days. Greatest distance hunters were Dr. R. C. Felts and Haskell England who hunted pheasant in Nebraska.
