110 Years Ago 

October 15, 1914

Hal Holcomb was here from the Richland Springs country with a mixed load of potatoes and apples which he readily sold. The apples were of the Ben Davis variety and were very fine. They were of his own raising and show that San Saba County can’t be beat for fruit.

The marriage of Mr. S. R. Watson of Coleman to Miss Jessie Patterson of San Saba was solemnized at San Saba. Following the ceremony, Mr. and Mrs. Watson left for Coleman arriving there on the 10:47 p.m. Santa Fe.

The Stork left bouncing baby boys at the homes of J. T. Edwards and Lon Jones.

A team of horses belonging to Mr. M. H. Horton ran away up Commerce Street and demolished the wagon. A few days later the same team ran away and left the wagon scattered from the Beveridge bridge to High street. This is what we call running away in both directions.

Miss Gladys Williams entertained the Circle at the lodge room with a delightful repast. The occasion was Miss Gladys’ anniversary and a large number of members and visitors were present to help celebrate the occasion.

70 Years Ago 

October 14, 1954

Thomas Stewart, son of Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Stewart of San Saba, won the $1,000 cash first prize on the radio program, “Chance of a Lifetime,” plus a week’s singing engagement at the Latin Quarters Club in New York.

Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Gregg of San Saba returned recently from attending the Tennessee State Fair where their son-in-law, Boyd Stewardson, as herdsman for the Eagle Hereford Farm, Exhibited the Grand Champion Bull, a polled Hereford, as well as winning first place for the junior yearling first place for the junior yearling heifer and the best pair of yearlings entered.

San Saba Volunteer Firemen have built an extra-large barbecue pit and a large T-shaped concrete table with concrete benches at the head of Mill Pond Lake in the City Park area, and plan to make these facilities available to various groups free of charge.

Miss Barbara Smith, who is attending Nixon-Clay business school in Austin, visited in the home of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Buddy Smith of China Creek community.

Six new members were “tapped” by white-robed figures at a student assembly program in the school gymnasium signifying their selection as members of the San Saba Chapter of the National Honor Society. The new members, all seniors, are Anita Owen, Carol Wilder, Irene Gamboa, Shirley Johnson, Larry Funderburk and Thomas Smithhart.
