The Richland Springs Report

I have entered the technology age yet again. My son pushed me into the iPhone age by giving me his old phone. I’m a long way from proficient and certainly not attached at the hip with that thing. I can see why they are handy, but watching the addiction of our people to their phones, does not appeal to me. I decided to get the smart watch to add to me techno savvy even though I knew I dislike having things attached to my arms. The day that it was supposed to be delivered, there was a blog about how the watch saps strength from your arm. Great, so now I have a device that takes my vitals and weakens me at the same time. Dick Tracy used to be a joke talking to his arm, but technology has caught up with art. My first watch call was a hoot that would make our young folks laugh. I can see clearly that I’m not walking far enough each day. I guess I either must walk more, or have my watch advise me that I’m falling on the health job.

It’s been a rough October for many areas of the country. Our mid-east states are reeling under the aftereffects of Hurricane Helene. Now Milton is making a beeline for Florida. Florida is usually in a better state of readiness than North Carolina and neighboring states are. It didn’t help that the people who are supposed to help were not prepared for Helene. I’ve seen a few angry interviews with victims who can’t understand why the response is so slow. In fairness, when you see the devastation of the roads and waterways, it’s obvious a different rescue approach is needed. Praise God for the individuals who are coming to the rescue with their own resources.

Please pray for the victims of this terrible storm.

There was no game on Friday due to the passing of our opponent’s coach. Our prayers are with his family and community. Although, we did not lose a coach, our community was stunned by the sudden death of Lance Perry. Lance has been an active and vocal participant in our school and sports programs. I’ve taken three of his kids on field trips, and they are attribute to his upbringing. Please pray for his family as they deal with this sudden loss. Services will be Wednesday in Cherokee.

There’s a home volleyball game on Tuesday against Lipan, another on the weekend. Junior high football will play Brookesmith on Thursday at Brookesmith. Varsity boys will play Brookesmith on Friday at Brookesmith. Varsity volleyball will play Saturday at home.

Community events scheduled are Quilting and Bible study Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday is FCA, Kids’ Church and Shiloh Youth. Visitors are welcome to attend. The Men’s Breakfast will be next Saturday the 19th. All community men and their sons are welcome to attend.

I found out at the last minute that the VFD fish fry was on Saturday.

I don’t know how come I didn’t see any notices, but I will try to keep better track next year. Don’t forget the fall festival coming up at the school at the end of October. If you want some fall pictures, there are several areas around town set up for photo opportunities. Jason Lewis has a display in front of his house, Chrissy's Plants has a free photo op display. Lord's Farm downtown has a pumpkin display as well as RS BoHo Unique. The Beautification Committee has done a super job of beautifying our little town.

Editor's Note: Send us your 'Fall Photos' to share with our readers in our Friday digital newsletters!

We are praying for Mondo Garcia and his family. His dad fell at the hospital and broke several bones. He is being moved to Forth Worth area. Johnny Reeves is continuing his cancer fight. Both he and Lynn need our prayers. My husband Russ fell and peeled back the skin on his arm. It will take a while to heal. The young man who was burned in the motel room needs our prayers as well. The Perry family needs prayers and comfort only God can give. Special prayers for his dad who has faced this horrible news many times.

Prayers are needed for our country, for our elections, for the storm victims of Helene and Milton and for our open border. A local rancher told me there were several men walking across the pasture who should not have been there.

Most of all, pray for our precious troops who are in harm’s way and the loved ones who are at home worrying. God, please protect America and rescue her from her dangers.
