The Richland Springs Report

I hope everyone is enjoying the cooler weather. We are having an amazing year. I have seldom seen my land green at this time of the year. Farmers and ranchers are overwhelmed by the amount of hay they’ve gathered this year. It’s a wonderful problem to have.

There have been so many years of low harvests and blistered land. We still need rain to keep this weather trend from disappearing.

I noticed they are working on FM 45 again. Hopefully, it won’t take as long to complete this section as it did for the Wilbarger section. I understand they had a bridge to build - and it’s an incredible bridge, but it seems to take forever. I’m not looking forward to seeing my big oaks laying crumpled beside the road, but the wider road will be a blessing. Traffic seems to be picking up both on FM 45 and Highway 190. Most of the traffic seems to be following speed limits, but some of those big trucks just speed through town.

The end of the year is approaching, and with it comes the holiday season. Please be thoughtful concerning friends and family who have lost loved ones recently. Holidays alone are a terrible thing. My family is spread across Texas, and planning a family gathering is akin to planning a massive campaign. It’s a shame that families are so disjointed these days, but it’s part of our migrating patterns for jobs and housing. Opportunities are out there, but they may not be in your neighborhood. I’m excited that my children and grandkids are successful and enterprising, but it’s a sad thing for the family who are left behind.

I’m inundated with messages, texts, and emails from political parties. The phone calls come at all hours of the day.

I’ve had several from a charming lady called Grace for Medicare Advantage supplements. The third time she called, I explained firmly that I had said no several times and didn’t want another call as the answer would be the same. A second voice came on the line and said, “completion of AI call, terminate and remove from list.” I feel sorry for folks who have cold calling as a job, but I am not patient with the new robot calls.

Students will be taking benchmarks this week for core subjects. Plus, we have an active athletic calendar. Junior high volleyball girls have a solid winning record. High school girls have a game this week. Varsity boys football have an away game this Friday.

They continue to roll through their schedule unchecked by any opponents so far. Last Friday’s game against Giddings was finished by the 45-mercy rule. Fifth Quarter was over by 9:30 p.m. Our boys need a challenge to prepare for finals.

The fall bow making class did not have many attendees, but we were a rowdy group. I’m extremely pleased with my wreath and centerpiece. We’re hoping to have a second event that is better attended. If they have a Christmas event, I intend to go.

All school and church events will take place as usual.

Ladies Bible study and quilting will be Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. Kids’ Church is Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, followed by Youth at Shiloh at 6:30 p.m. We have four churches here in Richland Springs, and all newcomers are welcome to attend.

Please pray for our country, our political parties, and our upcoming elections. Please don’t stay home, get out and vote in November. Pray for the damage and heartache caused by Hurricane Helene, the extreme flooding left in its aftermath, and our open border. Most of all pray for our precious troops and their families as the intensity in the Middle East sends more troops to that region.

God be with them all.
