70 Years Ago June 24, 1924
Pvt. Ewell D. Lord, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Lord of San Saba, is reported to be serving with the 7th Infantry Division in Korea. The men of the “Hour Glass” division are now undergoing intensive training to maintain peak combat efficiency.
Mrs. B. F. Hays and Bonnie Jean and Miss Peggy Sanders of San Angelo were here visiting relatives and attending the rodeo last week. Miss Sanders also participated in the rodeo events.
A good many of our people attended the San Saba rodeo parade. Amy Johnson and Jan Sloan were in the parade. Amy and Jan are four years of age. They rode horseback with their daddies.
The Pierian Study Club, with a float depicting an Indian maid by the waterfall, won first honors in the club division of the rodeo street parade; and City National Bank, using a religious theme, took first place in the commercial float division. A large copy of the Bible was the center of interest on this float, with a colorful rainbow bearing the inscription, “The Hope of the World.”
Mr. and Mrs. M. C. Onstott and two children, Marion and Juanice, left for Claude, where they will make their home at present. The Onstotts, who lived one mile east of town, have been residents of San Saba for many years.
Little Marie Cummins of Wallace Creek, lost control of her bicycle and plunged down the creek bank and fell, breaking her right arm between her elbow and wrist. She is Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Cummins’ youngest daughter.
60 Years Ago June 25, 1964
Kelly Barnett and children of Muleshoe visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Pat Barnett last week. Marilyn brought her roping pony and was a contestant in the cloverleft barrel race each night of the San Saba rodeo.
Mrs. Clay Galloway of San Saba has announced the engagement and forthcoming marriage of her daughter, Lydia Estelle, to Billy Goodwyn, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Goodwyn of Houston.
Business notes: The blue all-steel and concrete home of San Saba Tractor Co. on West Wallace with blue-trim tractors in formation is a pretty sight. A formal Open House will be held soon. Gene Conner Feed and Produce will soon get a new home located opposite Behrens Humble Station.
Work in preparing for the street widening project which is to get underway here early in July, has beet stepped up considerably. Several store building owners are getting the awnings of their buildings altered to specifications of the Texas Highway Department. In the block from Watkins Pharmacy to Harry’s Fabric Shop, work has got underway this week altering the awnings and also in the block from The Man’s Store to Annabelle’s Early American Shop.
San Saba Archery Club held it’s first Rotating Trophy Shoot at the local archery Range on US Highway 190. A Total of 27 shooters participated followed by a barbecue dinner. Wadine Ivy was the top woman shooter and Al Davis of Austin, the top man shooter. Davis was chosen from among 3,000 archers of Texas as the “Archer of the Year for the State,” according to Mrs. Wadine Ivy.
