We should take God's moral law seriously. God takes it seriously when we sin. We do pay a price when we disobey.
Psalm 66:18 - If I had cherished iniquity in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.
What do we forfeit when we sin?
We forfeit joy. We forfeit peace. We forfeit the power of God. We forfeit fruit in our ministry. We forfeit the power of the Holy Spirit. We might even forfeit our ministry.
There is so much we forfeit when we are disobedient to the law of God.
We can never forfeit our eternal salvation, but we do forfeit temporal blessings because of failing to obey God and failing to confess it when we do disobey God.

To see how David responded to God when he had sinned, see Psalm 51. Verses 1-4: Be gracious to me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness; According to the greatness of Your compassion blot out my transgressions.
Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity And cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions, And my sin is ever before me.
Against You, You only, I have sinned And done what is evil in Your sight, So that You are justified when You speak And blameless when You judge.
And sinners will be converted to You.
