80 Years Ago May 18, 1944

Lt. and Mrs. Eldon Duncan are the proud parents of a little girl born May 16. She has been given the name of Nancy and weighed 8¾ pounds at birth. Nancy’s father is somewhere in Italy in the Air Corps.

Mrs. Alma Ward Hamrick writes from Kentucky that she saw the Kentucky Derby races and has seen many of the famous horses in Kentucky including Man O’War and Whirlaway. She is visiting her daughter, Mrs. John Lane, and Captain Lane in Elizabethtown, Ky.

The T. J. Cummings Hatchery took off 63 trays of turkey eggs this week, amounting to about 6000 turkeys. It is the largest number of turkeys that he has ever taken off since being in the hatchery.

Miss Grace Vogel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Vogel, has finished her business course from Mrs. Jackson’s Business College at Lampasas and is working in the office for her father.

Lt. Clarence Gosch and Flight Officer S. J. Howard, who are stationed in England, had the pleasure of meeting there and talking over the good times once spent in San Saba.

Mrs. Ray Hillman, teacher of third and fourth grades, took her pupils to San Saba where they boarded the train for Algerita, as some had never had a train ride. A picnic lunch was enjoyed at Harkeyville picnic grounds and then they went to San Saba to the movies.

70 Years Ago May 13, 19544

Mothers of Mrs. Irene Gibsons Kindergarten class were honored with a program by the children. Following the program, which carried out Mother’s Day theme, the members were presented with a coconut cake.

Mr. and Mrs. John Ellison have received the announcement of the arrival of a granddaughter whose parents are Lt. and Mrs. Harold Ellison of Beale Air Force base in California. Mrs. Eula Gray, Mrs. Ellison’s mother is visiting with them.

The highlight of the news of our Sloan community the past week was the wedding of Betty Ann, Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ward Ellis, and Craigan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Irby Johnson, at the New Hope Presbyterian church conducted by Dr. James F. Hardie.

An out of county woman pleaded guilty in county court to a charge of driving while intoxicated, and was assessed a fine of $50 and court costs of $23. Her driver’s license automatically was suspended for a period of six months.

Improvement is still going on in Richland Springs. The foundation for the Bill Aslton Garage and Filling Station is laid, just waiting for the green cement to dry before going ahead with structure of concrete tile and stucco finishing. Mrs. Ora B. Smith has had her home repainted inside and outside. J. C. Gibson has built a log and wire fences around his place.
