Down Memory Lane

70 Years Ago April 1, 1954

A good time was enjoyed by all who attended the Sinclair Farm Show at the club house in China Creek. The club women sponsored a pie supper and cake walk, and the Mauldin String Band was there to play some real good music.

Thanks, Chamber of Commerce, for the new coat of paint on the sign overhanging the street at the north entrance to town that says, 'Welcome to San Saba –– Pecan Capital of the World.' The $64 question ––why is this sign on Texas Highway No. 190 running east and west on main street through town? Highway No. 16 is a mere farm-to-market road, in comparison to Highway 190 in the number of cars that pass through our gates daily.

Mr. and Mrs. Thieldon B. Harrell, San Saba, are parents of a son, born March 24 in Memorial Hospital. He weighed 5 pounds, 13 ounces, and was named Johnny Mac. He has a sister, Marsha Colleen, age 16 months. The father is meat cutter at Sloan's Grocery and Market.

Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Joekel Jr. of San Antonio will spend the weekend in San Saba visiting his mother, Mrs. W. H. Joekel Sr.

Calvin C. Daniel Jr. flew to Lake Charles, La., on March 13 to be the best man at the wedding of A-1c Robert L. Gregg of Oil Center, N. M., and Carolyn Craig of Lake Charles, Daniel and Gregg served on Okinawa together. Daniel presently is employed as a research clerk by the Texas Veterans' Land Board of Austin.

Carl M. Tyler, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Tyler of San Saba, is at the Fort Bliss Antiaircraft Artillery Replacement Training Center for basic military training. Tyler's wife is the former Mary Ann Blodgett of Lometa.

60 Years Ago March 26, 1964

Gregg Bogard was among the students at Texas Tech, who made the Dean's Honor Roll the last semester. A pre-vet student, he is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Bogard.

Mrs. and Mrs. Augustine Gonzales are the parents of Gloria Diana, 7 pounds, 6 ounces, born March 16.

Mr. and Mrs. Harmon Sonsom vacationed and visited in Corpus Christi, Sinton and Portland. They report a wonderful time even though Harmon was somewhat put out because the water was too rough for fishing. The San Saba High School track team scored 26 points at the Comanche Redskin Relays. Jerry Eden won first place in shot put with a 50-foot put and fourth place discus throw with a throw of 132 feet. Jarvis Shaw placed first in the high jump. His jump was 5'6'. James Gaddy ran the 440-yard dash in 4.3 seconds to with sixth place.

Johnnie Oswald, local SCS work unit conservationist, worked with T. K. Mitra and O. P. Saxena, foresters of India who are here for training with the Soil Conservation Service Work Unit. Their special interest is watershed management, which they will study while in training with the local SCS.

Junior Evans was selected as the 4th outstanding young farmer of Texas and received a trophy at the banquet in Fredericksburg.
