60 Years Ago March 12, 1944

Calvin Hector was elected to the San Saba Fire Department by members at the regular meeting. Hector will fill the place of the department due to the resignation of Red Nance who was moved to Lampasas. Fire Chief Joe Ragsdale made the announcement of the newly elected fireman.

Mrs. R. T. Short celebrated here birthday March 8. Helping to make her day happy were her daughters, Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Bryson and children of San Antonio and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Ford of Richland Springs.

The San Saba Girl Scouts sold 1510 packages of cookies to the people of San Saba during their annual cookie sale according to Mrs. Jackie Stewardson, cookie chairman. 'The sale, held throughout the 19-county Heart of Texas Girl Scout Council, was a great success. The sale gave the girls an opportunity to earn money for troop activities, to assume responsibility and to handle simple business transactions.

Mr. and Mrs. Bernabe Coronado of San Saba announce the birth of a daughter, Veronica Inez, at San Saba Memorial Hospital. The baby was born March 2 and weighed eight pounds and 9 ounces. Mrs. Coronado is the former Carolina Hernandez and their other children are Fermin, 12, Domingo, 11, Mario, 10, Virginia, 9, Bernabe Jr., 7 and Freddie, 15 months.

Over one hundred years ago, the donors of the Methodist grounds gave an entire block for buildings and facilities. This showed much forethought. All modern day churches give much thought to space for parking cars adjacent to the church. The Methodist Church has ample space at the back of the building. For several years it has been enclosed by a panel fence and is a park, of sorts. One week out the year, it is used by children who attend church school.

30 Years Ago March 17, 1994

Donnie Eckhoff added to his trophy collection when he won the Rambouillet Grand Champion Ewe award in the Junior Breeding Show at the 1994 Houston Livestock Show for the third year in a row. He also won Reserve Champion Ram.

San Saba's Jason Tilson was named 1st team all-district in basketball. Kelly Phillips and Landon Sanderson received honorable mention. Tislon is the son of Joe Mack and Sherry Tilson, Phillips is the grandson of Lewis and Ethel Pierce, and Sander son is the son of Kathy and Jim Edmonsdon and Larry Sanderson.

Dee Dee Reavis and Donnie Smith were selected San Saba High School King and Queen of Hearts. SSHS King and Queen of Hearts representatives were Freshmen Holli Riggs and John Curtis Weyerts, Sophomores Melissa Miller and Jimmy Hill, Juniors Carey Amthor and Donnie Smith, and Seniors Dee Dee Reavis and Landon Sanderson.

Shirley Amthor was the winner of the Pecan Pie Contest. She will take her pie to Austin for a special event at the State Capital to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the pecan tree.

Pecan Pie Shirley Amthor contest winner 9 inch pie crust:

1 c. flour 1/2 tsp. salt 1/3 c. shortening 3 tbs. cold water Mix flour, salt and shortening (will look like course corn meal), then add 3 tbsp. cold water. Roll out on floured board and place in pie pan.

Filling:

4 eggs 2/3 c. sugar 1 c. white corn syrup 3 tbsp. melted margarine 1 tbsp. flour 1/4 tsp. salt 1 tsp. vanilla extract 1 tbsp. milk 1- 1/2 c. chopped pecans Mix sugar, flour and salt, add to slightly beaten eggs. Add corn syrup, melted margarine, vanilla and mild. Add pecans and bake in 9 inch unbaked pie crust. Start at 400° for 5 minutes then reduce heat to 350° and bake for 45 to 50 minutes on next to bottom rack in oven.
