70 Years Ago January 14, 1954

The San Saba County Ministerial Alliance agreed to make a request of the citizens of this county, as follows: 'The San Saba County Ministerial Alliance, taking into consideration the burden of work that falls on ministers on the Sabbath Day, and considering the desirability of those who work in funeral homes to have a day off, preferably the Lord's Day, hereby respectfully requests the people of this county not to request funeral on Sunday, except in cases where it is unavoidable.'

Richard S. Taylor, who is stationed in La Rochelle, France, writes that he has received a promotion to the rank of sergeant. Sgt. Taylor reports some very sever winter weather in Europe. The marriage rate in San Saba county the past year slumped slightly under the 1952 figures records at the county clerk's office show. Only 68 marriage licenses were issued in 1953 compared with 72 in 1952.

The distinction of being San Saba's first baby of 1954 goes to Jerry Bruce Moore, son of Dorothy Hamrick Moore and the late J. B. Moore. He weighed 12 pounds and 12 ounces at birth. He will be the recipient of a $25 Savings Bond and a number of gifts from San Saba merchants.

San Saba girls won the consolation trophy in the Lometa Invitational Basketball Tournament, nosing out Bertram 15-14 for the honor.

20 Years Ago January 15, 2004

Lee Murray, a senior San Saba football player, was recently named to the Class 2AAcademic All-State Football second team. TheAll-State teams are chosen by the Texas High School Coaches Association, which has over 12,000 active members.

The Cherokee Lady Indians Varsity placed 2nd in the Cherokee Tournament. The team includes Annie McWilliams, Mari Jackson, Natasia Jackson, Kasey Dobbs, Michelle Reeves, Lacy Broyles, and Maggie Fry.

The used car lot is back open at the home of Jack and LaNell Daniels of Bend, the Lincoln is the only thing left to sell as the truck was sold. When the car goes that will be the end of the car lot for a while. Jack will soon be known as 'Trapper jack' since he is now in the business of trapping varmints along the river.

The San Saba High School Dilloettes performed at half-time at the Dallas Cowboys vs. New York Giants football game at Texas Stadium at Irving, Texas. The young ladies were invited to perform because of their accomplishments at the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader Competition. The Dilloettes received First Place in their division. Dilloettes that were able to attend were Jacquelyn Vaughn, Merideth Martin, Spencer Stewart, Amy Whitney, Laramie Robbins, Megan Smith, Courtney Hair, Kali Lord and April Gibson, The children of Lillie Randolph celebrate the life of their Mother on her 100th birthday at Oakridge Nursing Home in Brownwood. Her children are Jean Harr, Brownwood; W. E. (Red) Randolph, Belton; and Jolene Doyle, Brownwood.
