Buck Gilcrease presided over the January 11, 2024, business meeting of San Saba Rotary, Thursday at Pepperbelly's. Eighteen regular members were present to welcome the two San Saba High School honor students to the group. These two National Honor Society students were juniors, Esperanza Baéz and Jessica Nyugen, and both are active in sports, band, and student council. As juniors, Esperanza in her future career is interested in social work, and Jessica hopes to pursue a degree in Computer Science and Business.
Gilcrease who serves as San Saba School Superintendent, again commented to the membership on the quality of San Saba teachers and students. Gilcrease shared that there are 9,000 public school campuses in Texas, and of those more than 1,300 are high schools. He and art teacher, Shara Wright, shared that local student Gracen Shahan, who was featured last meeting as an honor student, has since had a piece of her art work displayed in the Bob Bullock State Museum in Austin!
Jerry Blankenship reported that honor students from San Saba, Richland Springs, and Cherokee will be attending the Rotary Youth Leadership Academy (RYLA) this upcoming weekend with other Rotary sponsored youth leaders from across the State of Texas. The leadership training is to be held in New Braunfels from January 12-15.
Jacqueline Carlson, chair of the spring honor banquet, asked for volunteers for planning the large student gathering and banquet where scholarships are announced and awarded to students. Dora Miller volunteered to be in assist in determining catering.
Finally, the long awaited Political Forum for national, state, and local candidates is planned for Tuesday evening, January 30, from 6-9 p.m. at the SSHS cafeteria. County residents are encouraged to attend and hear candidates for various offices, obtain literature, and ask questions of those present.
