The veterans of the Wiley B. Murray Post No. 27 met Thursday, September 14th at the legion hall in San Saba for their quarterly stated meeting. Thirtytwo people were in attendance. Special guests were Boy Scout Troop No. 55, who posted and retired the colors. The programs were provided by students John Robert Ham and Jefferson Stencil of San Saba High School.
Ham, a senior, presented a report about his experiences at the 2023 Texas Boys State Convention. Ham was sponsored by the Post to attend the event at the University of Texas. He spoke about the many things he learned concerning the American democratic form of government, sharing his experiences with the veterans.
Stencil, a sophomore, spoke of his project to obtain a memorial for San Saba native Lieutenant Commander Heywood Lane Edwards. Edwards was one of the first American casualties of World War II, more than a month before the Japanese Empire attack on Pearl Harbor. He graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1926.
Officers elected for 2023-2024 are: Commander – Jan K. Huffstetler; Adjutant – R. J. Cox, Sr.; 1st Vice Commander – Charles K. Stevenson; 2nd Vice Commander – Johnny L. Holder; and Sgt. at Arms – William J. Temples.
The American Legion would like to remind the public to utilize the flag drop box when retiring old and worn flags. It is located across from the courthouse and between the library and police department.All flags receive honorable and dignified treatment by the local Boy Scout Troop of San Saba.
