On September 4th at 2 p.m., the San Saba Garden Club (SSGC) gathered at the historic Mill Pond Park Clubhouse for their much anticipated first fall meeting of the year. The aged building, rescued from demolition and lovingly restored by SSGC members in the 1950s, has been beautifully maintained through collaboration of the City of San Saba and SSGC during the ensuing years. Needless to say, the clubhouse holds a special place in members’ hearts, especially those with family ties to the original rescuers.
Hostesses for September’s meeting were Janice Bates ( chair), Mandy Finch, and Marissa Killman. The decorations and light luncheon they prepared were reminders that, despite our 100+ degree temperatures, fall is just around the corner. Beautiful bronze spider chrysanthemums and purple aster graced the buffet table, which was temptingly spread with Mexican corn cups, bacon-wrapped jalapeno poppers, seasoned crackers, and an irresistible apple cake with rich caramel icing. Beverage selection included peach iced tea, bottled water, and coffee. The atmosphere was particularly warm and convivial as members gathered following their busy summer activities and travel.
Following the social interlude, members engaged in a hands-on activity, making mini pumpkin pinch pots. This creative endeavor was made possible by the hard work and expertise of member Sarah Lott, who brought all the materials and assisted participants in their pottery endeavors. These unique creations will be fired in Sarah’s kiln, with members eagerly anticipating their return at the October club meeting to be held at Sarah’s residence.
Planting with a Purpose
The day’s lively activities concluded with President Debbie Shahan introducing guests Pam Johnson and Marsha Smart, who received a warm welcome from SSGC members. Shahan next shared plans for the coming year, all centered around her chosen theme, “Plant America: Plant with a Purpose.” Supporters of SSGC are proud of its dedication not only to nurturing gardens but also to nurturing a sense of purpose and community among its members.
The meeting adjourned at approximately 4 p.m., leaving those in attendance inspired and looking forward to a season of gardening, creativity, community service, and camaraderie.
