To grow appreciation of nature and the environment, the Science Mill is introducing its newest exhibit–the Food Forest–at a Grand Opening on Saturday, August 19, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at 101 South Lady Bird Lane, Johnson City, Texas.
The all-new Food Forest is located in the museum’s Science & Art Park. The living space features raised beds planted with a variety of native fruits and vegetables, a striking herb spiral, and saplings of fig and pear trees. The installation is designed to be an “ever-evolving, living exhibit,” according to a spokesperson.
“The Food Forest will offer visitors a unique experience with every visit,” said Ashley Kortis, Director of Advancement and Marketing. “Visitors will be immersed in what it means to work in harmony with nature, and help understand the necessity of a balanced ecosystem to food security. Our hope is this will inspire them to become champions of conservation and sustainability.”
For the Grand Opening, staff and guest speakers will be on site to share information and education about the project. Access to the Food Forest is included as part of the museum’s regular admission fees. All regular exhibits and the gift shop will be open. The ribbon cutting takes place at 11:00 am.

The Food Forest was installed by the museum staff with financial support from HEB's Our Texas, Our Future Initiative, and the Favrot Fund.
The Science Mill is a 501(c)3 non-profit museum that opened in 2015 to offer innovative Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math programs and more than 50 interactive exhibits to all students–regardless of economic status, location, gender or race. Innovative installations, events, and hand-on programs are offered throughout the year.
