Cleanup yields over 16,000 pounds of trash

On Saturday, April 15, 2023, Keep San Saba Beautiful and the City of San Saba held the Great American/Don’t Mess With Texas city-wide cleanup. Sixty-two volunteers gave up their Saturday morning to clean up the community.

Volunteers were dispatched into neighborhoods, parks, waterways, and along the highway to collect litter, while others cleaned on their own and disposed of their loads at the Recycling Center. Collectively, over 16,000 pounds of litter were gathered. In addition to the trash, approximately 100 pounds of plastic beverage bottles were submitted in the recycling contest.

In appreciation for volunteering, volunteers were given an opportunity to receive free T-shirts, a free ice cream cone coupon (courtesy of Dairy Queen), a gift card, and a sausage wrap meal grilled by the City Electrical Department crew after their cleanup shift. The volunteers’ hard work made it difficult to determine the winners, but it was fun and the prizes were awarded as follows: Virgie - Volunteer Raffle, Mateo - most unusual item, and Jaime and Louis - most bags/trash. In the recycling contest, Elizabeth Gonzales - 1st place; the San Saba Unit (Warden Coger) - 2nd place; and Gale Ivy - 3rd place. If you see these volunteers, please thank them for cleaning your community and for their support in our efforts to Keep San Saba Beautiful!
