70 Years Ago April 30, 1953

More than 30 boys are coming out for spring football training sessions at Rogan Field each afternoon on school days, and will continue training through May. Coach Ben F. Hardy directs the training sessions. He will be on the Llano school faculty for the remainder of the school year and then will come to San Saba as head coach.

Scout Troop 55 of San Saba represented by the Eagle and Panther patrols, won top honors in Scouting Skills contests at the South District Camporal in San Saba. The Panther Patrol won first; the Eagle Patrol third place; and three local Boy Scouts were in a four-way tie for first place honors. These were Gene and Jerry Benton of the Eagle Patrol and Terry Don Bowers of the Panther Patrol.

San Saba, referred to as the town with the big red courthouse, now has a courthouse with a very pretty setting–the well manicured lawn, dotted with pecan and other trees...To Dan Peterson, custodian, goes the award of Couthouse Lawn of the Month.

Dean Barclay, whose wife is the former Naoma Randolph of San Saba, has been assigned to duty on a destroyer escort out of San Diego, Calif. He visited here and in Austin recently with the Glen Randolph family and with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Barclay.

Announcement was made of the hiring of Charles Chrane as supervisor of schools at San Saba and Cherokee, a new administrative post for the two school systems. Chrane, who has been a faculty member and coach at San Saba High School for a number of years, will work under the direction of the superintendents of the two schools.

One of the blue-ribbon entries in the San Saba Garden Club's Spring Village Flower Show was arranged by Mrs. R. C. Felts for Hartley's show window. The 'artist's' pallette had carnations of several colors to represent the paints, and an arrangement of gladioli on the easel represented the painting.

30 Years Ago April 29, 1993

According to City Manager Darrin Barker, the Spring Clean-Up Program that was made available to San Saba residents was a huge success. There were many people that took advantage of the free service, so much that the Superior Sanitation crews were not able to pick up all the trash that day.

The duo of Isai Arredondo and Wesley Adams combined talents to win the boys doubles in the Junior High District Tennis Tournament and Kris Higginbotham walked away with 1st place in the boys singles. The Jr. High Dillos won the tournament with a score of 49.

Sophomore Mandy Lebow, daughter of James and Lisa Lebow, will compete at the University Interscholastic League (UIL) State Journalism meet. Miss Lebow placed third in the news division in the Regional competition in Abilene. At the District meet in Cisco, she placed second.

It's 'roadeo' time at the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). That's right, maintenance crews in San Saba County recently competed in a r-o-a-de- o that, instead of challenging them at calf roping or bull riding, challenged them to drive a 6-yard dump truck through a series of obstacles intended to sharpen driving skills and increase safety. James Wilson, a 14-year veteran of the department and the assistant foreman in San Saba County, walked away from the San Saba 'roadeo' with first place honors. Wilson scored 255 points out of 300.

The residents at San Saba Nursing Home celebrated the arrival of spring with an outdoor barbecue. Some of the residents enjoying the beautiful outdoor weather were Leland Priddy, Opal Nowlen, Ruth Hall, Lillian Hartley, Dorothy Ringo, Florence Golding, Mary Moore, and the famous cook, Arnold Martinez.
