During what is described as a “jaw-some” weekend on July 12-13, young scientists can explore the world of sharks at the Science Mill in Johnson City.
A full slate of challenging hands-on STEM activities has been scheduled over the two days, designed to expose young scientists to facts about the ocean’s apex predator and to meet a shark expert.
Shark Dissections (ages 8-17)
A Science Mill Education Specialist will lead participants through the dissection of a dogfish shark. This will provide an understanding of the functions of its different organs and how they contribute to the animal's survival in its natural habitat.
(Saturday only, 11:30am, 2:30pm, additional fee, spots limited)
See Like a Shark
Using a special process, visitors will mimic shark vision to search for and find hidden prey.
Electric Snack Attack
This activity allows students to hunt for prey using a specialized tool that mimics a shark’s sixth sense called electroreception.
Chomp Challenge
For this creative activity, guests will design and build a shark or shark mouth using a variety of provided materials.
Special guest Matt “The Shark Guy” Marchant
This renowned shark photographer and expert will be on site on Saturday, July 12, to meet visitors, share facts about sharks, and answer questions.
The Science Mill is located at 101 South Lady Bird Lane Johnson City, TX. Shark Weekend hours are 10am - 5pm on Saturday; 12pm - 5pm on Sunday. The museum’s more than 50 exhibits and gift shop will be open.
Except for the dissection activity, activities are included in regular admission. Tickets can be reserved in advance at www.sciencemill.org.
