Keep America Beautiful (KAB) believes that people and places are profoundly interconnected. Whether you reside in a big city, a suburb or a small rural town, the Great American Cleanup (GAC) is an example of how lasting, positive change happens when people work together.
Through programs like GAC, KAB affiliates, corporate partners, and organizations, alongside millions of volunteers, contribute to the transformation of communities and public spaces. Together, they work to.
Keep San Saba Beautiful (KSSB), a GAC affiliate, in partnership with the City of San Saba, and several local organizations, came together recently, over several weeks, to keep their community cleaner, safer, and healthier.
On March 26, several volunteers from the San Saba Garden Club (SSGC), SS Bird & Nature Club, KSSB, Clearview Resources Center, and the City of SS Parks Department and Water Department came together and did their part, cleaning up and beautifying several public gardens around town (pollinator, keyhole, and patio gardens), some beds and the SSGC clubhouse grounds.
On March 27, the SS Elementary school completed their submission for the plastic bottle recycling challenge. KSSB, in conjunction with the GAC spring cleanup, challenged the students to collect plastic bottles for recycling as they did last year. In only 8 school days, the students collected over 17,700 bottles. The 300+ students and staff did a tremendous job, keeping many bottles out of our landfill, for a healthier environment.
On March 29, the City of SS, KSSB, the Rotary Club, SS Adult Probation Department and several volunteers, came together to clean up litter around the community, along the highways, and public parks. Litter pickup supplies were provided for the volunteers. These volunteers had an opportunity to enjoy refreshments and lunch sponsored by Atmos Energy with chances to win prizes. Lucky winners included: Michelle, GT, David, Buddy, Kolby, Juan, Rhonda, Gail, Edwiin and a few others. Approximately 65 volunteers collected 43,760 pounds of trash, recycled 80 tires and 1240 pounds of plastic bottles, (collectively with the Elementary School).
On April 11, KSSB, the City of SS, and SS County welcomed approximately 24 LCRA employee volunteers to beautify a few public areas in town. Several volunteers transformed the beds/grounds of the Rylander Library, as the county project of the LCRA Steps Forward Day. The city also had a Steps Forward Day project--volunteers removed old mulch and refreshed playgrounds in Mill Pond Park with 100 cubic yards of new mulch, creating a safer place for children to play.
It takes many volunteers to accomplish many tasks, but together it can be done, as demonstrated by these few tasks. Thank you to all our VOLUNTEERS, remember when we work together, we can make San Saba a cleaner, safer, and healthier environments where people can live, work, and play!
