A Word from Wayne

It’s a great day to be a Dillo! Monday, June 8th, marked the start of hopefully a promising future. There were students on campus. Yes, actual physical bodies, not Zoom-faced sleepy heads.

It has been months since students have been on our campus, and Monday our athletic programs were in full force getting ready for fall sports. Coach Aguirre, Coach Cummings and their staff of coaches are following the UIL guidelines for reentry.

As educators, we are in the kid business, and virtual educating just isn’t the same as having kids in front of you.

Just as Monday was an exciting day for our coaches, it was exciting for the students as well. They are ready to get back in the groove, too. Tuesday may not have been as exciting as Monday for our athletes because I am sure there are a lot of sore muscles.

On Thursday, June 11th, our boys’ basketball team will receive their co-state championship awards via a Zoom presentation. We are happy to present the actual awards to the team because they came in the mail on Monday.

I would also like to say thank you to all our community members and organizations that gave scholarships to our graduates. You gave $69,400.00 dollars to promote beyond high school education for our students.

We can finally put the 2019-2020 school year behind us and look forward to the 2020-2021 school year. What will next year look like? Will we have school as normal? Will fans be allowed in the stands for athletic events? I do not know, but I am hoping and praying for not only normal, but for better than normal.

We should always be trying to improve how we do things, and we have learned a lot about education while in quarantine. I have also learned that we do not want to do it again.

We need to pray not only for a vaccine but also for good judgement from our leaders. Sometimes all the different agencies can have conflicting guidelines making it difficult to comply with the rules.

We are Armadillos, and we are resilient. We know how to dig in and hold strong, and we will. Go Dillos!
