San Saba Native Wayne Gatli received his membership into the Sons of the American Revolution Society on May 20, 2023 in the Marble Falls Chapter. Wayne became interested in his ancestry in the late 1960's. None of his immediate family knew anything about their fam - ily History.

A man named John Hancock (direct descendant of the signer of The Declaration of Indepen - dence) married a Gatli in Ten - nessee and attended the annual Gatli reunion in San Saba. John Hancock relayed information that the Gatli's were some of the first people to come to America in the 1690's to the first colony in Jamestown, Virginia.

Charles Gatli was born in 1745 in Philadelphia, Pennsyl - vania, to James Gatli.

Charles moved to Kentucky with Daniel Boone across the Cumberland Gap. Charles and Daniel became close friends and fought in several Indian battles. In one battle, Daniel Boone's brother was killed. Captain Charles as he became known served in the Virginia militia. He accompanied Daniel Boone to the Virginia Legisla - ture in 1781 or 1782, as Boone was a member of the Virginia Legislature.

Captain Charles served under George Rogers Clark during the Revolution. He was a Revolu - tionary war hero and has a His - torical marker at the Courthouse in Williamsburg, Kentucky. In 1780 while serving as Captain in Ruddles Fort, the Fort was at - tacked by the British and Indians. Captain Gatli's wife and four children were in a forced march by foot under terrible conditions all the way to Detroit, Michigan. Captain Gatli recaptured his family in 1783. One of his chil - dren had died and his wife had a son by an Indian.

Captain Gatli became a huge land owner in Kentucky. He Fathered 10 children and passed away at the age of 90 at his home in Williamsburg, Kentucky. The Gatli's came to Texas between 1865-1870. Wayne's great-grandfather was a Texas State policeman in Austin in 1870. Wayne's grandfather moved his family from Bell County to San Saba County in 1915. Wayne's Father was born in a dugout on the Colorado River in 1916. Wayne is very proud to become a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and to be from San Saba County, Texas.
