Several members of the San Saba Golden Armadillo Band traveled to Austin this past weekend to compete in the Region 32 UIL Solo and Ensemble Competition. Our saxophone quartet performed “Sinfonia No. 3” by Bach and earned a Division 2 Excellent rating. Members of the Saxophone Quartet are Jose Aguilera-Valdez and Chris Vega on alto, Leia Kilman on tenor, and Jonathan Garcia on bari. The Clarinet Quartet performed 'Chase of the Centaurs' by Walker and earned a Division 2 Excellent rating. Members of the Clarinet Quartet include Esperanza Baez- Garcia, Natalie Cuevas, Sophia Cuevas, and Marlane Rodriguez-Estrada. The Brass Sextet performed 'The Earle of Oxford's Marche' by Byrd/ Walters and earned a Division 2 Excellent rating. Members of the Brass Sextet are Zylie Hunt and Angel Reyes on trumpet, Atleigh Hunt on French horn, Alex Aguirre on trombone, Neri Gonzalez-Perez on euphonium, and John Ham on tuba.

Advancing To State:

The Trombone Trio performed 'Lift Thine Eyes' by Mendelssohn/Collins and earned a First Division rating to advance to state. Their adjudicator said 'Nice quality sounds; your technique and musicianship were superb.' Members of the Trombone Trio are Alex Aguirre, Jesus Garcia, and Daniel Rodriguez.

The Flute Trio earned a first division superior rating advancing them to state with their performance of 'Classic Fantasy' by Waln. The adjudicator said 'WOW!! Super nice job. Great intonation, tone quality and precision. You were just a pleasure to listen to today.' Members of the Flute Trio are Daniela Baez, MJ Cantu, and Jessica Nguyen.

Also earning a First Division and advancing to state is the Brass Quintet. They performed “Largo and Finale” from the New World by Dvorak/Blahnik. Their adjudicator said 'Nice Tuba! Very nice intonation! Good technique, fluency and flexibility. Very good approach to style, phrasing, and tempo.' Members of the Brass Quintet are Karol Guerrero and Christian Reyes on trumpet, Evelyn Davila on French horn, Jesus Garcia on trombone, and One Nguyen on tuba.

We are very proud of ALL of the students who participated in the UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest. Their hard work helps the overall band program have success.

Quick side note, Karol Guerrero and One Nguyen are 4-year State Qualifiers. The state contest will be held Memorial Day weekend at Pflugerville High School.
