Simple Truths

Pastor Welton Watson, Central Baptist Church “If the foundation be destroyed, what can the righteous do?” Psalm 11:3. The foundation that it is speaking about is: The Bible, prayer, and righteous living.

Within a month, we will be celebrating “Independence Day.” As we look toward this day of freedom from a tyrannical government, we find ourselves once again entangled in a war of survival from our own government and people.

The U.S. comprises about 5 to 7% of the world’s population, but is responsible for probably 55 to 60% of its total drug abuse.

In this condition, most Americans know nothing about our Bible centered heritage. A case in point: “This is a Christian nation.” In 1892 the Church of the Holy Trinity in New York was accused of violating a federal immigration statute for trying to hire a preacher from England.

The United States Supreme Court made this ruling in the case: “Our laws and our institutions must necessarily be based upon and embody the teachings of the Redeemer of mankind. It is impossible that it should be otherwise; and in this sense and to this extent our civilization and our institutions are emphatically Christian.—This is a religious people. This is historically true. From the discovery of this continent to the present hour, there is a single voice making this affirmation… We find everywhere a clear recognition of the same truth… These, and many other matters which might be noticed that add a volume of unofficial declarations to the mass of organic utterances that this is a Christian nation.”

II Timothy 3:1 paints a vivid description of our modern society: “This know also that in the last days perilous times shall come.” When you can’t send your kids to school without armed guards posted at the entrances, and teachers armed for their protection, and when Churches have many of their members armed and cameras viewing every area of the Church, we are definitely in perilous times, and have come a long way in the wrong direction!

There is fear on every hand. Paul said in continuing in II Timothy 3:13, “But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.” Verse 12 says, “Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.” It will get worse for the Christian because evil men and evil activities will, and have, become worse and worse.

But, thank God there is a remedy found in II Timothy 2:19, “Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, the Lord knoweth them that are his. And let everyone that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.” We have a foundation in Christ, the solid rock, that cannot be destroyed. Be sure your anchor holds and grips the solid rock, then you can say as Paul in II Timothy 4:7, “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”
