Simple Truths

In 1 John 4:9, 10, we have one of the supreme attributes of God’s character: “In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.” God did not send his Son into the world just to make us comfortable, nor to cater to all our wants and desires, but to do for us that which we cannot do for ourselves; save us from our sins. If God were to allow unregenerate, ungodly (without God) people into heaven, heaven would soon become hell! Romans 5:8 “But God commendeth (Made accessible and acceptable) his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

We can only comprehend the love of God for us by a vision of the sacrifice Christ made on the cross. Jesus said in John 12:32 “And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.” This speaks of the death on the cross. Also, in John 10:17, 18 he talks of his sacrificial love in this way, “Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.” This was to be a demonstration of the love of God and Christ for us. He was a willing sacrifice, and the only sacrifice God would accept for the payment of sin.

The love of God for us is inexplicable, in that, we cannot grasp the kind of love that would act in the way that God has acted on behalf of humanity. He took the most valuable treasure of Heaven: (1 Peter 1:18, 19 “Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; 19 But with the precious ( priceless) blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.”) and offered him for us. That was the only way we could have fellowship with God.

Finally Jesus said in John 15:13, 14 “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. 14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.” Just what is his command and the Father’s will? John 6:40 “And this is the will of him that sent me, that everyone that seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.”
