SH 16 Improvement Project

The Texas Department of Transportation has a current roadway improvement project on SH 16 in San Saba County. The work begins about 0.4 miles south of the CR 140 and SH 16 intersection and continues north to the start of the Colorado River Bridge.

The project will widen the roadway and culverts to support a two way highway with alternating passing lanes. Crews are also upgrading 3,525 linear feet of metal guard fencing to meet current safety standards, adding safety end treatments to culverts that are not protected by metal guard fencing or railing, repair pavement, and apply a new road surface.

These improvements are designed to make this stretch of SH 16 safer for everyone who travels it. The addition of passing lanes will allow drivers to safely pass slower vehicles. Upgraded guard fencing helps prevent vehicles from leaving the roadway or crossing into opposing lanes, reducing the chances of serious crashes. Safety end treatments on unprotected culverts help lessen the impact if a vehicle runs off the road and also reduce erosion and blockages in the drainage pipes.

Work on the project began in December 2025 and is expected to be completed by August 2027, weather permitting.

A project like this takes teamwork. TxDOT’s design team handled early planning, design and engineering, the TxDOT construction team oversees daily work and inspections, and the contractor carries out the construction according to the approved plans. All teams work together from start to finish to ensure a safe work zone and finished roadway.
