Science takes the field this spring break

New sports-inspired STEM activities at the Science Mill, March 7-18

Families can get their hearts pumping and their brains ticking at the Science Mill this Spring Break with Science Takes the Field, an ALL-NEW, all-ages celebration of the science behind your favorite sports! Race, jump and problem-solve through a circuit of special activities in the museum and Science & Art Park, offered daily from Monday, March 7 to Friday, March 18.

The line-up of new activities puts a sporty spin on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Go for a field goal with the K’nex football launcher or play volleyball with a beach ball to experiment with the physics of air resistance. Test your coordination at the soccer obstacle course and discover how brains keep our movements and senses in sync. Step into the shoes of a sports statistician to explore the mathematics of athletics. See how humans’ jumping and racing abilities stack up to other species—including some six-legged guests.

Kids can also team up with the Mill’s STEM coaches to work on different sport skills: serve a tennis ball to a specific spot, kick a soccer ball over a goalie’s head, throw a curveball, get the proper spin on a football or hit a hockey puck to the corner of a goal. Tap into the power of physics to understand ideal body position and other science-backed ways to improve your game. Toddler and pre-K athletes will enjoy bowling with foam balls in all shapes and sizes to explore friction and mass.

Along with these special activities, families will have full access to the Science Mill’s 50+ interactive exhibits in the museum and outdoors. Take on the Giant Lever for a supersized tug-of-war game, compete in a battle of brainwaves at the Mindball exhibit, use the Virtual Body Table to explore anatomy for climbing, flying, and diving, and much more.

Science Takes the Field runs from Monday, March 7, through Friday, March 18, at the Science Mill. During that time, the museum will be open from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., Monday-Saturday and 12 - 4 p.m., Sunday; activities will be offered from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., Monday-Saturday and 1 - 3 p.m., Sunday. Easy-access parking options are available in front of the museum and west of the Science Mill just off U.S. 290.

Science Takes the Field is included with general admission to the Science Mill: $11 per adult, $9.50 for ages 3-17, $9.00 for seniors, $5.50 for military, and free for ages 0-2. Science Mill members get in free. Tickets can be purchased in advance at <http://sciencemill.org>.
