Pressed flower presentation highlights February meeting of SSGC

On February 6th, the San Saba Garden Club (SSGC) held its monthly gathering at Mill Pond Clubhouse. The club’s long-standing pre-meeting social hour was hosted by Karen Sloan (chair), Dianna Furlan, and Beth Griess. Notably, Marjean Anderson, although not part of the formal committee, lent her expertise to adorn the clubhouse and curate delectable refreshments, truly embodying the club's collaborative ethos.

Upon arrival, members and guests were greeted by a tableau of Valentine-themed charcuterie boards, artistically arranged on a red linen backdrop punctuated by delicate bud vases brimming with baby’s breath. An enticing array of cold cuts and heart-shaped cheeses; crisp, fresh fruits and vibrant crudités; and assorted condiments assured there was something to please everyone. Candied nuts, pink yogurtdipped pretzels, and Valentine’s chocolates arranged on a heartshaped charcuterie board added a sweet flourish to the spread. Water infused with raspberries and lime slices and a specially crafted Valentine’s Day punch were served in a trio of glass beverage dispensers.

The highlight of the afternoon was a presentation by Beth Erwin, Georgetown Garden Club member and officer. With credentials as impressive as her passion for horticulture, Erwin, a National Garden Clubs instructor, captivated SSGC attendees with her knowledge and expertise in flower pressing. Her credentials include current District V Director for the Texas Garden Clubs and accreditation as a flower show judge.

Erwin's presentation on the timeless art of “pressing to preserve” kept her audience spellbound. Drawing from her own experiences, including a cherished flower press bestowed upon her by a venerable botanist, she shared a wealth of techniques for preserving botanical treasures. From the meticulous process of drying blossoms to the delicate extraction of dried rosebuds from silicone gel, her demonstration sparked a newfound enthusiasm among members. Especially appreciated was a question-andanswer session following the speaker’s talk. Many departed the meeting, eager to try their hand at identifying and pressing flowers as well as finding ways to use them decoratively.

As always, San Saba Garden Club once again proved itself a vibrant hub of horticultural knowledge and communal pride. As spring approaches, members eagerly anticipate tending to their spring gardens and participating in the community’s efforts to keep San Saba beautiful.
