Seven Cherokee Indians headed to the 1A State Track Meet at the University of Texas at Austin's Mike A. Myers Stadium this past Saturday. Senior, Joey Bond brought home the gold in Shot Put, setting a 1A state record with a distance of 57' 7.75'. He placed 3rd in discus and 4th in the 200m dash. Junior Gunner Baugh placed 4th in High Jump. The 4X100 relay made up of Brady Johnson, Rode Ligon, Gunner Baugh, and Joey Bond placed 8th. The 4x200 relay made up of Caleob Houston, Rode Ligon, Gunner Baugh, and Jeremiah Wakefield (sub for Joey Bond) placed 9th. It is notable that Joey Bond has qualified for state 10 times and has competed at the state track meet for three years winning three gold medals, two silvers, one bronze, and a 4th place. Cherokee ISD wishes him the best of luck as he continues his track career at Tarleton State University in the fall. Congratulations to these athletes!

This week, Kora Berrio will be competing in the state UIL competition in a speaking event. Good luck to Kora!

Congratulations to two of our outstanding CISD teachers for their hard work and dedication to our students! Mrs. Laura Gratz received the Mirabeau B Lamar Award of Excellence, and Mrs. Kim New received the 2023 Texas Rural Education Association's Teacher of the Year Award! These are big accomplishments, and we feel blessed to have these ladies on our staff.
