The Texas Botanical Gardens & Native American Interpretive Center welcomes native plant specialist and author Ricky Linex to the Goldthwaite on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at 10 a.m., for Native Plants in Landscaping, a program exploring how native Texas plants can be incorporated into everyday landscapes while benefiting the environment. The program will be in the Goldthwaite Pavilion.
Landscaping in Central Texas can be challenging. Long periods of heat and unpredictable rainfall can make maintaining conventional landscapes difficult and costly. Native plants offer an alternative. Because these species are naturally suited to Texas conditions, they can create attractive, resilient landscapes while providing valuable habitat for wildlife. During the program, Linex will share his extensive knowledge of Texas native plants and discuss how homeowners and landowners can make thoughtful plant selections for their properties. The presentation will also explore how landscaping choices around our homes and communities can contribute to conservation beyond traditional parks and natural areas.
Linex brings decades of experience working with the native plants and landscapes of Texas. During his career with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, he worked extensively with Texas landowners and became a respected resource on native vegetation. He is the author of Range Plants of North Central Texas, a widely used resource for understanding and identifying the plants found across the region. “The knowledge of plants is critical for all users of native rangelands,” says Ricky Linex in his book Range Plants of North Central Texas, “Your success as a land user depends upon correctly identifying the plant and knowing the value of the plant to the species you manage.”
