The San Saba High School girls’ varsity cross country squad ran its hearts out on Tuesday, November 24 at the 2020 UIL Cross Country Championships held at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.
In a field of 12 schools that entered runners of five or more, as well as many other schools who entered individual runners, the Lady Dillos placed sixth with 143 points in the team portion of the girls’ Class 2A 3,200-meter run.
Leading the way as she has for much of the 2020 season, San Saba senior standout runner Brighton Adams was superb on Tuesday morning and recorded a top-10 finish at the state meet in sixth place with a stellar time of 12:49.30.
In and around the top half of a field consisting of 124 runners from 2A schools across Texas, three Lady Dillos’ runners put together solid efforts and finished in the top 70: San Saba junior Nojemi Martinez in 47th place at 13:41.99, senior Courtnee Cash with a mark of 13:54.87 in 63rd place, and freshman Jenna Lambert at 14:03.62 in 68th place.
Capping off the fifth, sixth, and seventh-place finishers for San Saba were the likes of junior Jadeah Lambert in 96th place at 14:37.81, sophomore Olivia Lusty in 102nd place with a mark of 14:49.09, and fellow sophomore Lexy Amthor in 107th place with a time of 15:10.29.
In the team portion, it was Sundown High School’s 53 points that edged out defending 2A state champion Gruver High School’s 72 points to become the 2020 UIL Cross Country State Champion.
Also placing up near the top of the leaderboard was Lipan High School in third with 92 points, Shiner High School in fourth with 113 points, Christoval High School in fifth with 123 points, and district rival Mason High School in seventh place with 152 points.
