Knights of Columbus present Liturgical Vestments

The Knights of Columbus council of San Saba presented Fr. Jojappa Polisetty with four Liturgical Vestments at mass this past Sunday. The Liturgical Vestments are the colors that a priest wears during liturgy.

The color green is worn for the majority of the year during what we call “Ordinary Time.” It represents Life, Hope, and Growth. On this chasuble you will see the motif “Alpha and Omega” which symbolizes God as the beginning and the end.

The color red is worn on Palm Sunday, Good Friday, during Pentecost, and the Feasts of Martyrs. It represents Passion, Blood, and Fire. The motif “Lamb of God” was chosen for this chasuble to symbolize Christ’s sacrifice.

Worn during the Lent and Advent seasons is the color purple. It represents Penance, Preparation, and Sacrifice. The monogram “IHS” was chosen for this chasuble. IHS are the first three letters of the name “Jesus” in Greek. This is Iota (I), Eta (H in capitalized form in Greek), and Sigma (S).

And finally we have the Liturgical color white. It symbolizes Purity, Joy, and Glory. It is worn during Christmas, Easter, and Feasts of our Lord, Mary and Non-Martyr Saints. The white chasuble is with a motif or monogram. The significance behind this is to emphasize simplicity, which puts the focus on the liturgical season, and the theological, rather than decorative, aspect of the vestment.

The vestments are made of a Damask Fabric. Damask is a luxurious, reversible patterned fabric characterized by a woven-in design creating a matte-on-satin contrast.

The Knights of Columbus would like to thank the St. Mary’s community along with the community of San Saba. We were able to make the purchase of these Vestments thanks to your contribution to our 2025 Lenten Fish Fry. We look forward to serving you all again with 2026 Lenten Fish Fry beginning Friday, February 20th.
