House on Wallace Street destroyed by fire days before Arctic Blast hits

San Saba and Richland Springs volunteer firefighters were called to a house fire around 4:00 p.m. Thursday, January 11th, in the 400 block of West Wallace St.

Upon arrival, San Saba firefighters discovered intense flames in the rear portion of the home. A resident of the home escaped the blaze, but the home, its contents, and an automobile in the garage were destroyed or heavily damaged in the fire.

Volunteer firefighters battled the blaze for nearly five hours as increasing winds fanned the flames and smoke. Traffic on Wallace Street was diverted so that hydrants across Wallace Street from the home could be accessed.

Smoldering piles of debris reignited overnight, and crews were dispatched to keep them in check.

We left the scene Friday afternoon at 1:30 after suppressing hot spots all night and morning. The house was demolished.

The San Saba VFD would like to thank the Richland Springs VFD for mutual aid; Hamilton EMS for treating firefighters on the scene; City Electric and Water crews for assisting firefighters in their efforts; and city and county law enforcement officers for providing a safer work zone.
