From the San Saba News & Star Archives 60 Years Ago December 16, 1965 Lucky Doug and Jack Sullivan in the purchase of the former B. R. Russell land at the mouth of the San Saba River, have come into possession of a mighty good pecan orchard. And in that orchard is a big, old native tree that has been known for many years as one of the best flavored, thin shelled ‘nuts produced in this county, “Home of the Paper Shelled Pecan.” In normal or good years, it produces around 700 pounds of the tasty little pecans.
V. C. Tyler, Jr., radioman of the USS Currituck, has been visiting his wife, the former Jo Ann Kunkel of Priddy; his mother, Mrs. V. C. Tyler Sr., and other relatives here, in San Antonio and El Paso. San Saba Junior High teams participated in the Llano Cage Tournament with the seventh grade taking championship honors according to Coach James Gibson.
Mr. and Mrs. Porter Edmondson and daughter, Virginia, of Bakersfield, Calif., came for a week’s visit with relatives and friends in his hometown. Edmondson left San Saba about 38 years ago. He last visited home folks here six years ago.
40 Years Ago December 19, 1985
San Saba Elementary students decorated the community Christmas Tree located on the San Saba County courthouse square. Several bus loads of students including Head Start were bussed to the courthouse to place handmade decorations on the tree.
Jim Farley killed a 9 point buck while hunting on the Iron Mountain Ranch in Marathon. Keith Shahan and Ken Golding also killed an 8 point buck while hunting in the same location. The deer were awaiting processing at the San Saba Locker Plant.
The San Saba varsity Lady Dillos basketball team topped the Lometa Hornets 38-22/ Teresa Harlin was high pointer with 12 followed by Veronica Correa with 10, Tammy Esquivel, 8; Sonia Reyes, 4; and Christie Holland and Estella Perez, each with 2 points. Leah Nettleship was outstanding rebounder with 6.
The San Saba Masonic Lodge #612 A.F. &A.M. celebrated 100 years of organization with a special program and Pot Luck Dinner hosted by members of the Eastern Star who were dressed in bonnets, high top boots and long dresses, depicting the period.
