80 Years Ago November 29, 1945

Mrs. Alva Dalton, who has been managing sales lady of The Fair Store here, has accepted a position in Goldthwaite with the Economy Store. Mrs. Opal Terry will assume the position in The Fair Store vacated by Mrs. Dalton.

Nelson Rushing is making some interior improvements in his Radio Electric Shop which will enable him to display his electric appliances for the holiday season.

Jack Owen, oil consignee here, has purchased a residence from his brother-in-law, Will Doran. The place has been rented to Mr. and Mrs. L. R. McLean, who have moved to a pecan farm near town.

Pete Sloan has a new method of killing bucks. Sunday night as he was driving home near a hollow, a buck jumped out and ran into his car, considerably damaging the car door, breaking the side glass and tearing the door handle off. The deer died. No doubt the noise of the motor startled the animal and the lights blinded him.

60 Years Ago November 29, 1965

The warm temperature was lowered late in the afternoon when a cool front, accompanied by a thick cloud of dust, moved across the county. Although no freezing temperature was predicted for the area, the weather men said cooler temperatures were in store, but no rain in sight. The dust cleared considerably the next morning.

Colonel Andrew R. Cheek, holder of the Nation’s second highest decoration for bravery in combat and other high awards, closed a distinguished military career, when he retired from the Army at the Presidio of San Francisco, Calf., with more than 30-years of military service. Born at Bend in San Saba county, Colonel Cheek is a 1934 graduate of Cherokee High School.

The San Saba News & Star office has a variety of gift items, including Adler portable typewriters, filing cabinets, desk calendars, list finders, all types of staplers, the newest edition of Texas Almanac, and many other items, besides subscriptions to the two newspapers.

Kenneth Gage shot a 9-point buck deer, which weighed 122 pounds, field dressed. This is one of the heaviest deer that has been brought to San Saba Locker Plant this season. Gage killed the buck on the Polk Sisters’ Ranch, west of San Saba. A total of 631 deer had been registered at San Saba Locker Plant .
