70 Years Ago December 24, 1953

Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Jackson are expecting to have as their holiday guests, Mr. and Mrs. Joe B. Smith and sons of Pecos. Mrs. Smith is the former Miss Clara Jackson of San Saba.

Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Locklear have announced the forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Miss Rita Jean Locklear, to Mr. Wayne Roberson of Denton. The nuptials will be read in the First Baptist Church here.

Among those of our friends who will celebrate their birthdays during the holiday season are: Mmes. Ed. Crawford, Nora W. Campbell, Busty Horton, Mmes. A. Cowan, Dama Halden Ollie Kring, S. G. Boynton, Clarence Gosch, and Sara Holcomb. These are outstanding good birthdays according to astronomy. The signs of Capricorn and Sagittarius proclaims that we are straight shooters and always climbing upwards.

The Humble Oil and Refining Co. is making some extensive improvements on the Humble Service Station on the West Side of the Plaza. A large brick and tile wash and grease building is being erected, and other improvements made. Harold Behrens has been manager of this station for the past sixteen years.

Through the efforts of County Sheriff Brantley Barker, pictures of all former San Saba county sheriffs will be framed and hung in the county courthouse, according to announcement made this week.

The law firm of Senterfitt, Crump and Jameson held open house when they finished moving from the upstairs of the City National Bank to their own building next door to the Norett Shop.

40 Years Ago December 22, 1983

The San Saba News Staff and their spouses enjoyed a Christmas party hosted by Mrs. H. C. McKee. A delicious buffet meal was served in a festive, Christmas setting. Gifts were exchanged by the employees and games were played. Attending the annual Christmas party this year were Don and Gail Sloan, Ken and Dora Evans, Jack and Donna Blossman, Jim and Sandy Havel, Alex and Leticia Reyes, Evelyn French, Juanita Shields, George Robertson, and the hostess, Kay McKee.

The Cub Scouts made Christmas ornaments for the Christmas trees and nurses stations at the Eventide and San Saba Nursing Homes. The group delivered the decorations to the homes and entertained the residents with Christmas Carols. Scouts participating were Sammy Johnson, James McNeely, Matthew Sutton, Darren Vaughn, Joe Bill Wallace, Guy Havel, and Cub Masters Larry McNeely and Jim Havel.

Dear Santa, For Christmas, I want a Duke of Hazzard Car, a Slumber Bag of Star Wars, and a Bogey Shirt Tales stuff animal.

EASY CARAMELS

1/2 c. white Karo 1/2 c. Borden Condensed Milk 1 stick Butter 1 1/2 c. Light Brown Sugar 1 tsp. vanilla Melt butter, add sugar, then Karo, milk and vanilla. Stir constantly, very slowly. When mixture begins to bubble good, continue to cook for 8 more minutes. Pour out to cool in an oblong buttered pan. When completely cool cut into squares postage stamp size and wrap in wax paper and store in refrigerator.
