80 Years Ago December 9, 1943

San Saba was organized into a county Feb. 1, 1856. Early in 1857 a county seat was laid out, and named San Saba. It is situated on the south side of the San Saba River about ten miles up stream from its mouth, and has an unrivaled water supply furnished by a large never failing spring.

Pvt. Tommy Stone of Camp Maxey, Paris, is spending a 14day furlough with his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Ira O. Stone, and family.

Mr. and Mrs. Jimmie Williams spent the weekend in Brownwood.

J. H. Nicks reports the sale of the residence on East Wallace St. owned by the Cumberland Church to Sam Moore. Shady Pause will be the name of a new cafe to be opened by Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Roberson in the Murray Building on the west side of the square next door to Edmiston Pharmacy.

In Addition to copies sold locally for Christmas gifts and for boys in service, five copies of 'The Call of The San Saba,' a 350-page book on the San Saba sector, went to out-of-county parties last week, according to the author, Mrs. Alma Ward Hamrick.

Among the young West Texas women who are carrying on the work of a husband who is in the services is Mrs. Garth W. Little of San Saba, who is in charge of the Little Butane Gas Company here, since her husband, prominent young San Saba business man, went in the U. S. Navy several months ago.

60 Years Ago December 5, 1963

Miss Rachel Beth Lewis and B. T. Van Cleave were married at the Chapel of Central Christian Church in Austin with Rev. Eugene Dye officiating. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Lewis of San Saba and the bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Van Cleave of San Saba.

Commander's Rocket Joe, owned and handled by Rueben Ashley, recently won the Heart O' Texas Pointer and Setter Club field trials. The dog also won first place in the Arlington Bird Dog Club field trials, and the Lone Star Field Trial. Nelly Gray, another Ashley dog, won a trophy in the puppy trials. The dogs were trained by Dean Lord.

Guests in the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Wayland during the Thanksgiving holidays included their daughters, Mrs. R. K. Tompkins of Mexico City and R. and Mrs. Clarence Foster and children, John and Claire, of West Columbia. John Foster is a student of Rice University in Houston.

Mrs. W. R. Baxter was honored with a birthday dinner in her home given by her daughters, Mrs. O. B. Harkey and Miss Grace Baxter. Mrs. Baxter was 87 years young Dec. 3.

Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Sullivan of Houston were weekend guests of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Sullivan and Gail.

Guests in the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Baker during the Thanksgiving holidays were their children, Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Baker and Miss Nancy Baker, all University of Texas students.
