SAN SABA BAND-DILLOETTES–– September 12, 1963––Although the band lost many members to graduation in the spring, San Saba has a sizeable band this fall as pictured. The San Saba School Band has a membership of 56 students at this early date of the school year and, as a part of the unit during the football season, a 15-member drill team known as the Dilloettes, all under the supervision of Director Russell Lewis. The band and the Dilloettes perform at the halftime during the football games and grace the sideline while boosting the Armadillos during the games. 60 Years Ago September 12, 1963

The First Methodist Church in San Angelo was the scene of the wedding for Miss Sarah Kathryne Mayfield and Billy George Franklin in August. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Mayfield of San Angelo and Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Franklin of San Saba are parents of the bridegroom.

Capt. and Mrs. Jerry Strader and children, Bob, Sally, Becky and Patty, of Dallas were weekend guests of her parents, Dr. and Mrs. F. W. Farley, and attended the San Saba-Goldthwaite football game.

Gary J. Byrd, 22 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Byrd, has been appointed as a member of the first year class in medicine at Baylor University College of Medicine in Houston. Byrd, a 1960 graduate of San Saba High School, will begin studies at the College of Medicine in September. He is a 1963 graduate of Texas University with a B. A. degree in math and a B. S. degree in chemistry.

They were five babies born in San Saba Memorial during the period of Sept. 2 to Sept. 9.

Mr. and Mrs. Balentine Cisneroz are the parents of Jose Luiz, 4 pounds, 5 ounces, born Sept. 2.

Mr. and Mrs. Candelario Galindo, Jr. are parents of Yvonne, 7 pounds, eleven ounces, born Sept. 2.

Mr. and Mrs. Truman Miles are parents of Marjorie Fay, born Sept. 2.

Mr. and Mrs. Benito Salazor are the parents of Feodor, 4 pounds and 11 ounces, born Sept. 3.

Mr. and Mrs. Donald White are the parents of Donald Ray, 8 pounds, 2 ounces, born Sept. 4.

The bat hike at the Bend State park was a huge success according to Debra Hicks. Seventyfive people not including the park staff took part. Everyone had a good time and the bats didn't fail to put on a good show. No one was disappointed.

This week at school we have discussed Patriots Week. Our purpose has been to commemorate those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, as well as those who serve in the military. A part of this remembrance has been writing lessons on the parts of a letter. Classes have written heartfelt letters to our troops who serve our country overseas.

Terry Smith, President of the Carrie Smith Memorial Fund presented a check in the amount of $1,000 to Charles Peeler, V. Pres. and Dora Miller, Pres. for the San Saba County Volunteer EMS.

Faustina Rocha is one of the friendliest people you will meet anywhere in San Saba, Texas. No wonder she has been named Pecan Valley Nursing Home Employee of the Month for August. Faustina works as a cook in the kitchen. She has been a faithful employee of this Nursing Home and its residents since July of 2000.

The San Saba Chapter of The Daughters of the Republic of Texas donated a Republic of Texas map to the Richland Springs Library. The map will be framed and will become a part of the Texas History section in the library.

Residents at Pecan Valley Nursing and Rehab enjoyed the juicy sweetness of watermelon. Summer is just not complete without it! Family and friends alike attended. Even though the weather did not want to cooperate that did not stop the fun, we just took it inside. Residents participated in a seed spitting contest, wheelchair race and biggest smile contest. Winners were: Juanita Longley, seed spitting contest, Zanda Coleman, wheelchair race and Mary Beth Kuykendall, biggest smile. All winners were awarded prizes.

The Grand Opening of the new SSES Campus will be October 13th. October 1st will be the first day for students in the new building.
