80 Years Ago March 26, 1942

The name Emmett Jackson Jones has been given to the eight and one-half pound son born to Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Jones at the Connors Nursing Home here. The mother is the former Grace Kelly and the baby, whose father is attending an aircraft school in Dallas, is the first grandchild of Emmett Kelly and the late Mrs. Kelly of this city. Mrs. D. J. Jones and the late Mr. Jones of near Algerita are the paternal grandparents.

Sixty-seven San Saba County women successfully passed tests given by Mrs. Stoy D. Roberts in Red Cross home nursing and first aid, and were awarded certificates of merit for the 24- hour course. In appreciation of the work offered, the combined classes presented Mrs. Roberts with a $25 defense bond.

We call special attention to the notice which calls the attention of the public of the reopening of the Estes fruit and vegetable stand on the southwest corner of the square.

Hayes Mullins, son of Mr. and Mrs. O. Mullins of San Saba, is a member of the Abilene Christian College Championship Badminton team which took top honors at the Southern Intercollegiate Badminton Tournament at Baylor University in Waco.

Little James Wood missed school Monday. This was the first time in four years, which he regretted very much. He is the grandson of Mrs. Jim Dewey, where he makes his home.

Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Norris had as weekend guests Dr. Harold K. Shawan and Mrs. Shawan of Detroit, Mich. The latter is a niece of Mr. Norris and the former is a goitre specialist.

Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Barnett and son of Beaumont spent the weekend here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wiley Pridgeon. Mrs. Pridgeon returned home with her daughter for a visit.

March 29, 1962

The gypsies, who entered several homes in the county pretending to be rubbing doctors or fortune tellers and robbed elderly people of their money, were apprehended at Austin last week. Sheriff Brantley Barker was notified by Austin authorities that the gypsies were there and he went to make the investigation. He was able to get the $161.00 taken from San Saba county people, returned by the gypsies.

Mrs. Lillie Smith left March 26 for a week's visit with her daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Marion Wash of Richland Springs.

The annual San Saba County Heart Fund Drive has been completed and a total of $784.85 was collected, Albert Behrens, county fund drive chairman, announced. Behrens stated that the workers did a good job and he expressed his appreciation for their work and also for the people of the county who contributed to the fund, which will aid research in finding better ways of controlling heart diseases.

The San Saba FFA livestock judging team placed sixth at the contest held at San Marcos, and second place at Abilene. Team members include Frank Whitley, Tommy Behrens, Ray Jones, Johnny Edmondson, and Bruce Brandenberger.

Wedding vows were exchanged between Carol Beckett of Eldorado and Herbert Locklear of San Saba on March 24 in the home of the groom's grandmother, Mrs. Lucy Woods of this city.
